Chapter 8 Vocabulary
Chemical bond- The force that holds two atoms together
Cation- Positively charged ion
Anion- Negative ion
Ionic bond-electrostatic force that holds oppositely charged particles together
Electrolyte- Compound whose aqueous (dissolve in water) solution conducts an electric current
Lattice energy- Energy require to separate one mole of the ions of an ionic compound
Formula unit- Smallest number of ratio ions represented in an ionic compound
Monatomic ion- Consists of one or more atoms of single element
Oxidation number- Number assigned to an element
polyatomic ion- charged ions composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded
Oxyanion- one or more oxygen atoms combined to another element
Electron sea model- all metal atoms are packed really close, so the outer electrons can be shared by all other atoms near enough to share.
Delocalized electrons- electrons in a molecule that are not associated with a single atom or one covalent bond.
Metallic bond- chemical bond in which electrons are shared over many nulcei
Alloy- a metal by combining two or more metallic elements
